The History of Ikarus

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ikarus became one of the largest bus manufacturers in Europe by producing and selling nearly 10,000 units of the world-famous 200 bus family annually, delivering Ikarus products to nearly fifty countries on five continents.

In the last 40 years, more than 250,000 buses left the Ikarus production lines.

As a result of the developments started in 2016, Ikarus developed and presented the first electric bus designed and manufactured in Hungary with a European type license by the fall of 2020.

Project name: Research and development for the evolvement and market launch of an internationally marketable, electric-drive, self-driving, intelligent servicing bus chassis range consisting of identical elements.

Contracted grant amount: HUF 841,035,235

Grant intensity: 53.16 %

Presentation of project content: Ikarus plans to implement preparations for the development of a self-driving, electric drive, high quality, yet cost-effective bus chassis range consisting of identical elements that is competitive on the EU market. The units of the chassis range consist of identical parts and main units. The design methodology established during the project allows the various units of the chassis range to support buses of varying lengths, satisfying varying user needs with a minimum of additional design work. Thanks to 5G communication, by optimizing the vehicles’ road traffic service, operating costs can be significantly reduced.

Based on research forecasts and markets trends, Óbuda University surveys the expectations of public transport operators as well as those using the service, based on which it prepares the data requirement specifications for the “Smart bus” and intelligent servicing system.
